Lawyer and aspiring poet, Francis Scott Key, anxiously watched Fort McHenry while the British bombarded it for more than twenty four hours. Had it surrendered? Or would the garrison hold? The answer was immortalized in a poem Key wrote on the spot, "Defence of Fort M'Henry," which would be published soon after as "The Star-Spangled Banner."
