Marshals and sheriffs dressed very much like Mississippi riverboat gamblers, which some of them had been earlier in their careers. After keeping the peace for a time in a rough town like Dodge City, the lawmen often obtained financial interests in saloons and dance halls. The town marshal was usually among the most interested observers when a stagecoach stopped to unload some new girls. He might view them as welcome additions to the town or as competition for his dance-hall girls.
