About the Painting
The bravery of Colonel Joshua Chamberlain and his Twentieth Regiment Maine Volunteers at Little Round Top on July 2, 1863, during the Battle of Gettysburg prevented the Confederates from flanking the Union line and attacking from behind. Ordered to “hold that ground at all hazards,” he and his men repulsed attack after attack. Late in that desperate afternoon, with his men nearly out of ammunition and in danger of yet another Confederate assault, Chamberlain reported: “It was imperative to strike before we were struck… At that crisis, I ordered the bayonet.”

Mort Künstler’s magnificent painting, Chamberlain’s Charge, captured this momentous counterattack, the turning point of the battle that proved to be the turning point of the war. Later, when asked how he and his men were able to endure, Chamberlain recounted, “In the privations and sufferings endured…in battle, some of the highest qualities of manhood are called forth — courage, self-command, and sacrifice of self for the sake of something held higher.”
