The adoption of a national flag was part of a much larger and more significant enterprise: that of providing the new nation with the symbols and insignia , the heroes and villains, the legends and stories and songs traditionally associated with nationalism - and so essential to a new people without a national past.

"We take," said George Washington, "the stars from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity representing Liberty."
