Historical Information George Washington had found out that the British planned to sail up the Hudson River from New York City to attack New England. He decided to prevent this by building a strong for overlooking the river at West Point. He also hired a nearby ironworks to forge a gigantic iron chain, 1,500 feet long, made up of 750 links. Each link was two to three feet long and weighted more than one hundred pounds. This great chain stretched across the Hudson River from West Point to Constitution Island. It was strong enough to stop large boats from moving past the guns of West Point. Each winter, it had to be pulled in before the river froze. |
