The Art of Mort Künstler / Documenting America / Book & Magazine Art / Magazine Covers

Unlike many of history's great civilizations, America has existed almost entirely in an age where media has been present to document the nation's trials and culture. During his long and complex career, Mort Künstler's art has found many ways to contribute to the visual landscape that this media provides.

Newsweek – War on Terrorism
October 31, 1977 Issue

On October 13, 1977, four members of the terrorist organization, Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, hijacked a Lufthansa 737 containing 86 passengers and 5 crew. The hijackers demanded the release of 10 terrorists being held in West German jails and 2 Palestinians being held in Turkish jails. They also demanded a $15 million ransom. After the pilot was murdered, the plane landed at Mogadishu Airport in Somalia. On October 18th, two members of the British elite anti-terrorist Special Air Services and a 26 member German unit stormed the airplane successfully. One terrorist survived and all of the hostages were rescued.
