Flag and Union Imperiled, The

“This piece presented me with a problem in historical accuracy. I was commissioned to show both the firing on Fort Sumter and the flag in one painting, but the Union troops had been ordered below, to the lower decks of the fort during hte battle, and the flag was flying outside in the courtyard. In reading eyewitness accounts of the battle, however, I discovered that one man, a Sergeant Carmody, had defied his orders and gone up on the top deck where he found these artillery pieces ready for firing. Although it ordinarily took six to eight men to handle all this equipment, Carmody single-handedly went down the line firing one gun after another.”
