End of a Legend
Stonewall Jackson, Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 2, 1863

Darkness and confusion prevailed when Jackson, A. P. Hill, and their staffs rode forward through the woods of Chancellorsville to ascertain the new line of the enemy. As the party galloped back through the dark forest, men in the Eighteenth North Carolina naturally mistook them for Union cavalry and opened fire. The bullets struck Jackson.
