Chamberlain and Staff

Historical Information

By the time of the Battle of Fredericksburg, professor-turned-soldier Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was showing distinct promise as a regimental leader, though his 20th Maine had seen no action.

Chamberlain watched anxiously as his regiment crossed the Rappahannock River. "The enemy's cannoneers knew the ranges perfectly" he wrote. "The air was thick with the flying, bursting shells; whopping solid shot swept lengthwise our narrow bridge...driving the compressed air so close to our heads that there was an unconquerable instinct to shrink beneath it."
