In 1845, A New York journalist used the phrase "manifest destiny," creating a slogan for the mood of the nation: "...our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence." Along the western trails the native peoples watched with awe and apprehension the unending wagon trains rolling across their lands.
