General John Buford

Historical Information

Despite the fact that two of his kinsmen became Confederate generals, John Buford (1826-63) was one of the North's most dependable cavalry officers. He blunted the enemy's advance on the first day at Gettysburg and bought enough time for the Union army to reach the field. Tragically, Buford died of typhoid fever a few months later.
