The Regulars Are Out!
Lexington, Mass., April 19, 1775

Historical Information

"Mechanics" were local Boston patriots who set up the first organized intelligence network in American history. On the night of April 18-19, Paul Revere and another "mechanic," shoemaker Henry Dawes, received word of an imminent British movement and set out to alert patriots that the redcoats were coming. His actual cry was believed to be "The regulars are coming out!" Revere embarked on his legendary ride, which was immortalized in a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1860, which transformed him forever into a national symbol of freedom.
