This Day in History
Boundary Line

On a day like today in the 1870’s...

With the introduction of fences and the closing of the open range, ranching became more competitive - more prosperous for some, less prosperous for others. Disputes over such issues as land claims, water rights, illegal branding, and rustling sometimes resulted in range wars like the Lincoln County War in New Mexico and the Johnson County War in Wyoming. Violated boundary lines almost surely caused gunplay.
