This Day in History
Oklahoma Land Rush

Opening of the “Cherokee Strip”
September 1893

In 1889, the vast territory of some 200 million acres in the “west” was open to American settlers. The date set for the opening - April 22, 1889 - saw the first “run” of homesteaders staking out their claims. Later runs occurred all throughout the 1890’s. In September 1893, came the opening of the “Cherokee Strip” - twelve thousand square miles along the northern border of Oklahoma.
