This Day in History
Sperm Whale Hunt

On a day like today in 1765...

The sperm whale industry began in New England as early as 1712. By 1765, the international sperm whale industry was an American monopoly. In its peak year, 1846, there were 729 Yankee whale ships at sea. The decline of the industry was hastened with the discovery of petroleum in Pennsylvania in 1859 and is probably the only old-style venture that was not destroyed by over-fishing.
