NASA Selects First Astronauts
April 9, 1959

The first seven astronauts for Project Mercury were selected on April 9, 1959. The group included Alan Shepard, the first American in space; John Glenn, the first American to orbit the earth; Scott Carpenter; Walter Shirra; Virgil Grissom; Gordon Cooper and Donald Slayton.
