Constitution Goes Into Effect
April 16, 1789

On September 17, 1787, in Philadelphia, the Continental Congress completed and signed the Constitution of the Unites States after a little more than three months of debate. This painting shows the first press run being inspected by the “patron saint” of American printers, Benjamin Franklin, as James Madison stands nearby.

Within a year the Constitution was ratified by the States and went into effect on the 16th of April, 1789 when President Washington made his Inaugural Address to the First Congress.
