The Invasion of Okinawa
April 1, 1945

On this day in 1945, the last major amphibious operation of World War II takes place with the invasion of Okinawa. With more than 1,200 ships and landing craft and 450,000 Marines and Army personnel, by nightfall a firm three-mile deep beachhead is established.
