March 15, 1944

During World War II, the Allies drop 1,400 tons of bombs, using B-17s, on Cassino, a small town in Italy. 190,000 shells are also rained down and totally devastate the town. Bitterly defended by crack German troops, the hill town finally falls to Polish troops in May.
