Apache Wars Begin
February 4, 1861
During the 1860’s, hostilities between the older American Indians and the new Americans grew in intensity. On this day in 1861, Lt. George Bascom hanged the relatives of Chief Cochise for a crime they did not commit. Cochise waged relentless war against the United States Army for more than 10 years. Peace talks in 1872 were successful and Cochise spent the rest of his life on a reservation in Arizona.
