Uphill Fight


Iwo Jima Campaign Begins
February 18-19, 1945

Under the command of Maj. Gen. Harry Schmidt, the 3rd, 4th and 5th Marine divisions begin the Iwo Jima campaigns with an amphibious landing. It turns out to be the costliest and most difficult in the history of the Marine Corps. Almost six thousand marines were killed or missing.
