Birth of the Marine Corps
November 10, 1775

On this day in 1775, the Continental Congress votes for the formation of two battalions of Marines to be raised. This is considered the official birth date of the Corps. Capt. Samuel Nicholson is the senior officer and becomes the first Marine Corps commandant.
