Crossing the River

On a day like today in the 1850’s...

Among the perils faced by wagon trains traveling into the West were river crossings. No bridge existed, which was seldom a problem on the Great Plains where streams such as the Platte ran shallow with slow currents. But when wagons entered the Rocky Mountains, they had to cross dangerous swift-running rivers.
