Haida Bear Dance


On a day like today in the 1500’s...

The Haida, one of the more distinctive tribes of the Pacific Coast, were far advanced in painting, carving wood, and building. Here, visiting members of the Eagle clan are being welcomed by the Raven clan with a bear dance, part of the annual potlatch ceremonies that include exchanges of gifts.
