This Day in History
Whale Leaping at Harpooners

On a day like today in the 1850’s...

Sperm whales like the one pictured here were hunted for the oil that they yielded, most of it coming from the blubber. Sperm oil was an excellent illuminant but by the end of the 19th century it was replaced by mineral oil and the sperm whaling industry went into decline. It made a comeback in the 1930’s when sperm oil found new industrial uses.
