USS Puffer Under Attack
October 10, 1943

During World War II, on this day in 1943, the American submarine, USS Puffer, engaged Japanese naval forces in the Makassar Straights in the Pacific. After a successful torpedo attack on a Japanese merchantman, they were forced to submerge and underwent a counter attack that lasted more than 31 hours. Under the capable command of Lt. Commander A.J. Jensen, the USS Puffer survived the ordeal “to fight another day.”
