Gold Discovered at Sutter’s Mill
January 24, 1848

On January 24, 1848, James Marshall, a carpenter, discovered gold on the south fork of California’s American River. He and his employer, John Sutter, were unable to keep the find a secret, and from that day everything was changed in the West. As soon as the news spread, thousands of Californians descended upon the area.
