After the Army established posts and forts throughout the West to control hostile tribes, a new type of soldier appeared on the scene. They were former Indian warriors who disliked the confinement of reservation life and enlisted as scouts. They proudly wore the Army uniform and received the same pay as enlisted cavalrymen. In Indian sign language, Apache scouts were known as “wolves.”
