Little Known Facts About Mort Künstler

Dromedary and Calf

...Mort Künstler painted this dromedary and calf in 1974?

It was done as a series of 38 paintings of wildlife varying from lions to garter snakes. They all showed the adult with its offspring and were commissioned by Scholastic Book Services to be used as finger puppets. Künstler still has most of the originals. His children had selected some to hang in their rooms. Now they are hanging in their children’s rooms!

The dromedary, or Arabian camel, measures 7 feet at the shoulder. It has only one hump. Long legs and a slim build let it carry a rider up to 120 miles in a day. Living in India, the Near East and Africa, the dromedary needs a lighter coat than the Bactrian camel’s. Eyelashes to protect its eyes from the sand, nostrils that close, and, of course, its hump are some of the adaptations the dromedary has for life in the desert. It has a single calf. Its life span is 30 to 40 years, during which it provides its master with wool and milk, as well as working as a beast of burden. Dromedaries are also used for their hides and meat.
