Little Known Facts About Mort Künstler

Turtle and Young

...Mort Künstler painted this turtle and its young in 1974?

It was done as a series of 38 paintings of wildlife varying from lions to garter snakes. They all showed the adult with its offspring and were commissioned by Scholastic Book Services to be used as finger puppets. Künstler still has most of the originals. Turtles are reptiles. A firm shell covers their bodies; only their heads, legs and tails protrude. Some members of their order are called tarrapins or tortoises. Different species are found all over the world. All the females, whether aquatic or terrestrial, lay their eggs on land. A clutch may vary from 200 eggs down to one. Different kinds of turtles attain a shell length of between 5 inches and 7 feet by the time they are full-grown. Some turtles have lived over 150 years.
