Ramage's Remarkable Rampage

...Mort Künstler did this painting of a United States submarine making a nighttime surface attack on a Japanese fleet?

It was done in 1963 to illustrate a story called Ramage’s Remarkable Rampage that appeared in True, a popular men’s adventure magazine of the era. Lawson P. “Red” Ramage, Commanding Officer of the submarine U.S.S. Parche, in a predawn attack on a Japanese convoy, sank three ships before diving to escape on July 31, 1944. he would later become a highly decorated war hero and received the Congressional Medal of Honor from a grateful nation. In July 1956 he was promoted to Rear Admiral and retired as a Vice Admiral in 1969. He died in 1990 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetary.
