These Apatosaurus dinosaurs ran in herds, with the smallest dinosaurs staying in the middle. The biggest dinosaurs ran on the outside and protected the small ones from enemies. Joanna Cole, a now famous children’s book author, wrote Dinosaur Story and Scholastic Book Services commissioned Mort Künstler to do the art. This was before the age of movies like Jurassic Park and computer imaging, so Künstler needed to do research the way he still does. He found a top authority in the field, Dr. Eugene S. Gaffney of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and worked with him to ensure accuracy.
