Little Known Facts About Mort Künstler

First Rollout of the Enterprise

...Mort Künstler painted the First Rollout of the Enterprise? It was the first painting of the major commission from Rockwell International and NASA to record the development, launch and touchdown of the first Space Shuttle, Columbia.

On September 17, 1976, the test Space Shuttle Enterprise was first rolled out of its hangar in Palmdale, California. In Künstler’s words, “After I received the commission to document the Space Shuttle, I became totally involved in the program and saw the hangar at Palmdale and the Enterprise up close. This painting is a reconstruction of the rollout; I did not witness the actual event. After seeing many photographs taken on that historic day, however, I noticed that none had been taken from inside the hangar, and immediately decided upon that as the perspective of my painting.”
