John Glenn and Friendship 7 |

...on February 20, 1962, John Glenn became an overnight national hero when he became the first American to go into space?
In 1985, Mort Künstler painted this picture of John Glenn in front of the tiny Mercury Spacecraft Friendship 7. Five years later, Künstler was an honored guest at the annual Semper Fidelis Award Dinner of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College Foundation, which was held on February 24, 1990 at the Radisson Mark Plaza Hotel in Alexandria, Virginia. Künstler and his wife, Deborah, were dinner partners with none other than Senator John Glenn and his wife, Anna!
