Little Known Facts About Mort Künstler

American Legion

...that this painting of a GI was done by Mort Künstler around 1957?

It was originally used as a cover for a man’s adventure magazine and shows an American soldier in the winter of 1951 during the Korean War. It was reproduced in a number of catalogs and books and was seen by the editors of American Legion Magazine. They requested permission to use it for their July 1993 issue. After it appeared, Mort Künstler received mail and phone calls from Korean War veterans who all agreed that it captured on canvas that terrible winter of the “Frozen Chosin” - the awful fighting around the Chosin reservoir.
