Little Known Facts About Mort Künstler

Yankee Rookie

...Mort Künstler painted this jacket art for the book Yankee Rookie?

This painting was one of the first book jacket assignments Mort Künstler received and was painted in two colors due to cost restrictions by the publisher. By choosing dark blue and orange, Künstler was able to mix varying combinations of the two colors and white to get the flesh color. Painted circa 1953, it was done for the publishing house A.S. Barnes. The book cost $2.50! The author was Ed Fitzgerald. Shortly after this assignment, Künstler would meet Ed Fitzgerald, not as the author, but as the Editor-in-Chief of MacFadden Publications. MacFadden published Saga, Sport and True Detective magazines and Künstler would end up doing paintings for all of them!
