An American Hero

Chamberlain became increasingly anxious as 1861 became 1862. The Civil War did not end with one battle, as so many people expected. In the summer of 1862, President Lincoln issued a call for 300,000 new volunteers to bring the struggle "to a speedy and satisfactory conclusion." The thirty-three-year-old Chamberlain visited Governor Israel Washburn and tendered his services. A week later, Chamberlain accepted appointment as lieutenant colonel of the Twentieth Maine.
