Emancipation Proclamation


Abraham Lincoln Signs the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation

The partial Union victory at the terrible Battle of Antietam during September 1862 provided an opportunity for Lincoln to issue his Proclamation. The document declared that all slaves in states which were still in rebellion on January 1, 1863, “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.”
