The Civil War, Day by Day

There's the Devil to Pay

“There’s the Devil to Pay”

As Union Major General John Reynolds galloped up to Seminary Ridge at 10:00 a.m. on July 1, Brigadier General John Buford pointed to the Confederate infantry forming an all-out attack on his cavalry. “There's the Devil to pay!” said Buford. Reynolds sent in his best unit, the Iron Brigade, to stop the attack but was killed as he directed its deployment.
