Admiral David G. Farragut, U.S., Born

During the Civil War, he commanded the Navy’s West Gulf Blockading Squadron, captured New Orleans in 1862, and was promoted to vice-admiral for his victory at Mobile Bay - where he reportedly proclaimed, “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!”
