Admiral David Porter Born

As a naval commander in the Civil War, Porter distinguished himself at Arkansas Post, Vicksburg and in the Red River Campaign. Promoted to rear admiral, he hastened the capture of the Confederacy’s giant Fort Fisher with the largest naval bombardment of the war.
