End of a Legend

Darkness and confusion prevailed when Jackson, A.P. Hill and their staffs rode forward through the woods of Chancellorsville to ascertain the new lines of the enemy. As the party galloped back through the dark forest, men in the Eighteenth North Carolina naturally mistook them for Union cavalry and opened fire. Three bullets struck Jackson.
