The Civil War, Day by Day

There Stands Jackson Like A Stone Wall (detail)

There Stands Jackson Like a Stone Wall

Nothing gave Jackson the appearance of a great conqueror. Wearing the dingy blue uniform of an “old” army officer and a VMI kepi that usually was pulled down on the bridge of his nose, Jackson rode to battle on his small horse with an abstracted air of concentration. Childhood hardships had made him so self-reliant that he rarely sought advice, civil or military. He talked no more than was necessary and took no one into his confidence except God - to whom he offered prayers several times each day - and his beloved wife, Anna.
