The Civil War, Day by Day

The Last Rally

Richmond Surrenders

Beyond the battlefield, an anxious Lee waited at Rice's Station with the remainder of his troops. As the refugees from the battle appeared, the usually composed Lee nearly broke down, exclaiming to himself, “My God! Has the army been dissolved?” Quickly recovering, the general picked up a battle flag and rode among the panicked men, rallying them with soothing words and his own composed presence. This was the last, dramatic rally of the Army of Northern Virginia.
