He could be cautious and questioning, as he was at Gettysburg, but in battle he could be determined, effective and courageous. As Lee prepared to surrender at Appomattox, Longstreet was willing to fight on. “General,” he told Lee, “unless he offers us honorable terms, come back and let us fight it out.”
