Lee would devise the battle plan; Jackson would execute the key movement, which usually was a secret, sweeping march that enabled him to smack the unsuspecting flank of the enemy. The rapidity of his marches brought his troops the title “foot cavalry.” They strained under his iron will, but they reveled in the fame he brought to them as well as to himself.
