The Civil War, Day by Day

Old Pete

Gen. James Longstreet, CS, of South Carolina

General James Longstreet held key Confederate commands, but his delays at Gettysburg prompted some Southerners to blame him for losing the battle and the war. When Lee proposed surrender at Appomattox, however, “Old Pete” was willing to keep fighting.

On March 14, 1862 Federal Troops Captured New Bern, North Carolina.
