Mort Künstler Hall

This article appeared in the Timber Ridge School Summer 2002 newsletter.

Timber Ridge School serves young men with a history of serious emotional, learning and behavioral difficulties.

Mort Künstler Hall, construction in progress

Because of his generous donation of artwork for Timber Ridge School's collectible ornament and assisting the School in raising nearly $150,000, we are extremely pleased to announce that the Board of Directors has voted to name our new Spruce residence Mort Künstler Hall. This news became official on Tuesday, July 2 during a meeting at the artist's Oyster Bay home. Mort Künstler is considered America's greatest historical artist and the best in capturing the Civil War. He has become well known for the extraordinary authenticity and drama for his work. In response to the naming, Mort said, "I really appreciate the valuable, heartfelt contribution that Timber Ridge School is making today to our youth. What could be more important than providing moral and academic direction for young people who have a need? I'm pleased that I could help a genuinely worthy cause like this one, and I'm deeply grateful for this honor."

The Ricketts Construction Company broke ground for Mort Künstler Hall in March. Our Spruce students represent our youngest boys and range from ages 11-14. The exterior of the residence will remain consistent with the beautiful logged exterior of all buildings that have been constructed in the recent past. Künstler Hall will include 8 bedrooms (with two boys in each room), one common living room, a recreation room, one staff office, a snack area, and laundry facilities. The lower level of Künstler Hall will contain a Life Skills Training Center that will be centered around a kitchen demonstration area with seating for 15. The lower level will also have a lecture hall, with elevated seating, that will be used for educational, cultural, and social opportunities. The lecture hall will seat 50 people.

Those who wish to leave a lasting impression on Mort Künstler Hall, giving levels have been established and are listed to the right. For those who wish to join a giving level, your name will be placed on a plaque, with other members of that level, and will be permanently hung in Künstler Hall. Also, those who join one of the giving levels will be eligible for a drawing of a framed Mort Künstler print. The drawing will be made by Mort during the dedication ceremony of Mort Künstler Hall in the spring of 2003.
