Visitors to the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania this year will see events, action and historical figures of the American Civil War brought to life through the original artwork of acclaimed Civil War artist Mort Künstler. In its first major fine art display since opening last year, the National Civil War Museum is hosting a six-month exhibition of Künstler's Civil War art, entitled "Gods and Generals - The Civil War Art of Mort Künstler." Künstler is the official artist for the forthcoming Ron Maxwell motion picture, Gods and Generals, which is a prequel to the epic film Gettysburg. The museum exhibition features more than forty original Mort Künstler paintings.

"These exquisite works of art depict key moments in the war that preceded the battle of Gettysburg," says museum head George E. Hicks. "This is indeed a very significant fine art exhibition. It is significant for the fine arts community, for Harrisburg and for the nation's Civil War community. Each painting is indicative of Mort Künstler's careful historical research and his commitment to creating superb Civil War art."

Hundreds of Civil War buffs and Mort Künstler fans waited patiently in line to meet the artist at the opening of the museum exhibition in late May. "Mort Künstler's skill and work as an artist of history is undeniably world-class," says Harrisburg Mayor Stephen R. Reed. "He sets a standard for detail, accuracy and poignancy that makes his paintings and prints must-have items for any museum or collection. Mort Künstler's talent and creativity bring history alive…." For hours, Künstler cheerfully greeted visitors and signed limited edition prints and books at the National Civil War Museum. "What a great museum it is," Künstler says, "and what a special pleasure it is to have my work honored in this way. It was also a great privilege to be at the opening and be able to say hello to the folks who appreciate my work. You know, an artist usually works alone, so it was a rare pleasure to meet so many people who share the same interest."

As the official Gods and Generals artist, Mort Künstler is painting a new series of six limited edition fine art prints entitled the Official Gods and Generals Collection, which depicts key historical scenes from the Civil War that are related to events that take place before the battle of Gettysburg. Künstler has also painted 35 new images for the film's companion history, Gods and Generals: The Paintings of Mort Künstler. The author of the book's narrative is the renowned Civil War historian Dr. James I. Robertson, Jr.
