An exhibit of works by noted painter Mort Künstler, official
artist for the upcoming Ted Turner-Ron Maxwell film Gods
and Generals, will be featured through December 1 at The
National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg.
Gods and Generals: The Paintings of Mort Künstler
is the museum's first major fine art exhibition since its
opening in February 2001. The display offers 40 paintings
of non-combat settings such as a soldier reading a letter
in the serene glow of a campfire.
The museum, at 1 Lincoln Circle at Reservoir Park, is
open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends
and holidays. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for senior
citizens and $5 for children. More information is available
by calling 260-1861 or online at www.nationalcivilwarmuseum.org.
A television special, Images of the Civil War - The
Paintings of Mort Künstler, aired on the A&E network
in 1983. It was the first TV show featuring one artist's
works on the Civil War.
After studying art at Brooklyn College, UCLA and Pratt
Institute, Künstler became an illustrator for book
and magazine publishers in New York City.
His paintings began attracting the attention of serious
art collectors in the early 1970s. In 1982, his interest
in the Civil War was triggered by a commission from CBS-TV
to do a painting for the miniseries The Blue and the
Gray.
That painting The High Water Mark, was unveiled
at the Gettysburg National Military Park on July 2, 1988,
marking the 125th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.
In 1986, more than 200 of his works were published in
the book The American Spirit - The Paintings of Mort
Künstler.
